Budget season officially kicked off this week in the Town of Ossining! Budget Director Maddi Zachacz and Deputy Comptroller Dale Ferreira joined me as we met with each department head to review and discuss their budget requests for 2020. It was a great opportunity to reflect on our progress in 2019, and plan ahead for 2020. All of our departments have so much planned for the new year, we are very excited to start sharing these new programs, offerings, and projects with our residents!
At our Town Board Work Session this past Tuesday, we heard from the Ossining branch of the NAACP and discussed how we can work together to educate the public on hate crimes and symbols of hate in an effort to ensure that these horrific instances have no place in our community. This was an essential conversation to have, and we look forward to working together in the future to establish a task force that can come up with an ongoing plan of action to ensure Ossining is safe and welcoming to all.
Earlier that evening, I had the opportunity to join Westchester County Legislator Catherine Borgia, the Westchester County Department of Planning, and the Village of Ossining for a Town Hall discussion on the 2020 Census. It was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the process for 2020 and why it is so important to ensure an accurate count. Our Census count determines so much on the federal level, including our representation to Congress and funding allocations – yes, including school district funding. The Town looks forward to being a partner in this process and we will share more information about how we can all help to ensure an accurate count when the Census kicks off next spring.

The countdown is ON! School tax payments for anyone living in the Ossining or Briarcliff Manor school districts are due by close of business on Monday, September 30th. If you still need to pay, the Tax Office will be open extended hours on Monday the 30th (8AM to 6PM), you can pay online, or make use of the designated mail slot at the Ossining Post Office (if you get it there before 5PM, it will be postmarked for the current day and sent right to our office). By law, we cannot waive penalties on late payments, no matter the reason, so please plan ahead!
This continues to be a busy time for our office, as we are heading into budget season AND finishing up our Discrimination and Harassment Training. Working with our insurance company (NYMIR), we have created a distinct login for each of our employees to complete the interactive training online. During an impromptu visit to the Highway Department on Tuesday, we stumbled upon Superintendent Connolly completing his training, and he was gracious enough to share his score... 100%!

Tonight is the night! Get your tickets now for the East Coast premiere of "The Wait Room," right here in Ossining at Louis Engel Park. "The Wait Room" is a California-based production that highlights the experience of women with loved ones behind bars and the unique hardships they face. Performances start tonight, Friday, September 20th at 8PM, with performances tomorrow, Saturday, September 21st at 3PM and 8PM, and one last performance on Sunday, September 22nd at 3PM. Huge shout out to the Sing Sing Prison Museum for bringing this moving performance to Ossining. "The Wait Room" was even featured in The New York Times and Fox5 News in advance of the performances! I had a chance to stop down and see the rehearsals and can assure you it will be very special and really moving.
You are going to want to head down to the waterfront before the performance starts tonight for one last encore of Food Truck Fridays! Tonight The Hudson Oven will be serving up pizza and local favorite Cravin' Jamaican will also be at the waterfront, from 5PM to 9PM. The Sing Sing Prison Museum will also have Greyston Bakery brownies-- a great complement to the theme and mission of "The Wait Room." It is going to be a beautiful night for dinner (and a show!) along the Hudson here in Ossining.

First things first. Special thanks to those who attended and helped to organize the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Engel Park this past Wednesday. While a challenging day for all Americans, we gather every year on this date to recognize the civilians who lost their lives, but also our first responders who were lost and the sacrifices made daily by those who remain. As always, I was humbled to be part of this ceremony and was honored to be able to recognize those in our community who served, continue to serve, and who keep us safe every day.

I hope you will join us this Wednesday, September 11th for our community's annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony. It is so humbling to gather together and reflect upon the horrific events of September 11th, 2001 and the heroic actions of so many first responders from our community that served on September 11th and continue to do so each and every day.
Even if you are unable to join us on the 11th, please note that Volunteer New York! will be teaming up with Westchester County to provide service opportunities this weekend (September 7th & 8th) and on the Wednesday the 11th. Check here for a list of volunteer opportunities and don't forget to register.
