This Weekend is about remembering those who gave all. Please make sure you take some time this holiday weekend to reflect on its true meaning.

This week the Village of Ossining dedicated a new pollinator garden in Richard Wishnie park to Sandy Galef in honor of her many years of leadership. Shoutout to Donna Sharett for picking a variety of native plants that will flower from early spring to late fall. 

 

We are thrilled to celebrate National EMS Week and extend our congratulations and gratitude to our incredible ambulance personnel. These dedicated men and women are the true heroes who selflessly serve our community every day. Their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and skilled care are an inspiration to us all. We are immensely grateful for their tireless efforts in answering the call during emergencies and providing life-saving assistance. To our ambulance crews, paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, and support staff, we express our profound appreciation for their unwavering dedication and vital contributions. Thank you for your remarkable service and for making a positive difference in the lives of those in need.

A Con Edison contractor, Gianfia Corp., will be conducting a gas project in the area Brooke Club Drive from May 22 to August 2023. Join scout troop 18 Briarcliff located in The Town of Ossining for a scout experience day on May 27 from 1-3PM at the Briarcliff Youth Center

There will be a free community Narcan Training hosted by Senator Pete Harckham, Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg, and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps on Wednesday, May 31st, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. The event will take place at 8 Clinton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562

Join the Mike Risko Music school for there rock workshop showcase with opening numbers by Risko Music Students on Wednesday May 31 2023 at 7 PM at The Woods Tavern 400 Croton Dam Road Ossining

A special concert celebrating the Old Mill Singers' 50th Anniversary and honoring the memory of Gary Bratt, founding and 40 year musical director, and John Massey, long standing member and group President. There are two concert dates and times: June 3rd at 7PM and June 4th at 3PM. The concert will feature a wide range of musical selections, from rock and pop to show tunes, classical pieces and favorites of the honorees. Something for everyone! Tickets available at the door or from any Old Mill Singers member. The Old Mill Singers also perform at local nursing homes in Westchester and always welcome new members.

The paving is in progress on Tappan Terrace and Leawood Drive. Thank you to superintendent Pete Connolly, and the highway department for the great work that they do.

NECS invites you to their Spoken Word Event. They will have a poetry writing workshop for the first half hour, after which participants will be invited to present their poetry in an open mic fashion. If anyone wishes to present another art form, they would love that! Taking place on May 21 3-4:30 PM

 

Solo acoustic renditions of classic singer-songwriter, Americana, country and folk songs - all performed by Tom Schumacher, founder and lead singer/guitarist of Westchester’s own, The Barn Vultures. Come hang out at the bookstore, meet new friends, and enjoy the music! This event will take place on Saturday May 20 at 7 PM at the Hudson Valley Books for Humanity 

 

The Ossining Arts Council (OAC) and Westchester Collaborative Theater (WCT) will present The 2023 Living Art Event (LAE), featuring OAC artworks and WCT one-act plays inspired by them, at the WCT black box performance space in downtown Ossining from May 12-21.

 

 

Join the Hudson Valley Books for Humanity on Friday May 19  for a moving exploration of the environmental and human impacts of the Vietnam War. Celebrated author George Black will read from his new book, The Long Reckoning: A Story of War, Peace, and Redemption in Vietnam. And journalist (and Ossining resident) Rene Ebersole will join George for a candid conversation before taking questions from the audience. Event is free; books will be available for purchase and signing.

 

Visit the Jewel of Teatown: Wildflower Island is a jewel afloat in Teatown Lake. More than 200 native wildflowers, trees, and shrubs come into bloom throughout the season. Join experienced guides for a tour, providing an in-depth look at the unique ecology of this sanctuary. This Event will take place on Saturday May 20 from 10 - 11 AM

 

Join Early Childhood Art Educator and insect enthusiast Caroline Erb for a sweep net session in the meadows of Cliffdale Farm. What invertebrates will we find in the tall grass? This event will take place on Saturday May 20 10 am- 12pm  

 

Discover the joy of junk journaling with local mixed media artist and leader of the Northeast Etsy Artists Collective, Robin Larido. Join us for a creative journey as Robin shares her passion for junk journals and guides you through the process of creating your own. The U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency will hold a virtual public information meeting on Wednesday, May 24 at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. ET to discuss the upcoming sampling and investigations in the Lower Hudson River. We are doing two encore Compost Give Back Days! On Friday, May 12, 2023 and Saturday, May 13, 2023 the Town of Ossining will be providing free compost to participants of the Ossining Composts program.  Hours will be 9am to 12 noon at Cedar Lane Park (235 Cedar Lane, Ossining).  Each participant will be able to fill a 6-gallon bucket with free compost.  Participants must bring their own bucket (the green, home storage/transportation bin from the compost kit is 6-gallons), or pre-purchase a composting kit at: https://ossiningcomposts.org/compost-kits/, which will include a 6-gallon bucket.  Please fill out this form to let us know that you will be joining us!

 

Come for inspiration, advice, and lots of beautiful new additions to make your spring gardens sing! Don’t forget to bring your gardening tools to be sharpened while you shop!

Spring is (mostly) here and it's time to get back to work cleaning and restoring our historic grave markers in Dale and Sparta Cemeteries. The Ossining Historic Cemeteries Conservancy starts their season on Saturday, May 13th, from 9:00 am to Noon at Dale Cemetery in Ossining.  All ages and experience levels are welcome - equipment and instruction are provided.  Be sure to follow the yellow arrow signs from the entrances to find the location in the cemetery. So mark your calendars and bring your friends - it's a lot of fun too!  Students can get community service credits. The AMD PTA is holding their spring fundraiser a life in motion, photography mini family photo sessions, the dates available are April 20- May 13

  

 

Ossining-based Westchester Ballet Company presents a special one-hour spring performance on May 17th at 7:00 pm for families with young children at Chappaqua Performing Arts Center that includes Peter and the Wolf, Etudes, and Dance of the Hours.

Happy Friday everyone. I hope I will be seeing some of you at any one of the four opportunities to join in cleaning up and removing invasive species during the Riverkeeper sweep on  Saturday morning.

This Saturday at 2:30 PM at the corner of State Street and aqueduct, there will be a street naming in honor of Dr. George W Hill.

Dr. Hill has made a real impact on the lives of Ossining residents especially our Black community, not only during his life, his impact and Legacy continue to this day.  He started  the Cooperative scholarship fund to help many black youth pursue higher education. Dr Hill was also known for helping many black youth find employment in their chosen fields. 

He was the first black attending physician at a hospital in Westchester and was dedicated to providing access to quality medical care for the black community. He founded the Ossining Negro Civic Organization, fought for fair housing and so much more which you can find out about on the Village of Ossining’s Historian section of the Village of Ossining’s site.

 

On Saturday at 2:30 PM there will be a big rally in Cortlandt against Holtec, the company decommissioning Indian Point who intends to release 1,000,000 gallons of radioactive water into the Hudson river. Join Riverkeeper, Clearwater, Local, State and National Representatives as well as many other organizations and community members in protesting this travesty. 

 

This Saturday Green Ossining will be having their semi annual tag sale with over 60 locations throughout Ossining.

Spring is (mostly) here and it's time to get back to work cleaning and restoring our historic grave markers in Dale and Sparta Cemeteries. The Ossining Historic Cemeteries Conservancy starts their season on Saturday, May 13th, from 9:00 am to Noon at Dale Cemetery in Ossining.  All ages and experience levels are welcome - equipment and instruction are provided.  Be sure to follow the yellow arrow signs from the entrances to find the location in the cemetery. So mark your calendars and bring your friends - it's a lot of fun too!  Students can get community service credits.
