All I can say is, thank goodness for the Spray Park! We have experienced steady 90 degree + temperatures for the past several days, but it seems that a short reprieve may be coming this weekend, so fingers crossed that we may all be able to breathe and move just a little bit easier. Why not make the best of it and enjoy an evening with a cool river breeze? The Uncle Brothers will be taking the stage at Louis Engel Waterfront Park tonight (Friday, July 21st) at 7PM. You'll want to bring the kids along-- The Uncle Brothers are family-friendly entertainment, themes like respect, conflict resolution, and kindness figure prominently in their material, and who couldn't use some more of that in this day and age? I look forward to seeing you down there-- bring a picnic dinner to enjoy, or a few dollars to buy a snack from our food trucks. It's going to be a great night out in Ossining!
Tonight is also opening night for WCT's "July One Acts" at 23 Water Street, the show begins at 8PM. I was invited to the "Sneak Peak" last night and I thoroughly enjoyed all four plays. I recommend you check it out, if not tonight, than at one of the other performances this weekend (Saturday, July 22nd at 2PM or 8PM, or enjoy a special Q&A session with the playwrights and director after the 3PM performance on Sunday, July 23rd. We are incredibly fortunate to have such innovative and affordable entertainment right in our own backyard, and many members of the WCT group are Ossining residents!
Rain, rain, go away! It has been a soggy week in Ossining, and unfortunately, that rain will continue through this evening. We have decided to postpone tonight's concert, featuring KJ Denhert, until TOMORROW evening (Saturday, July 15th) from 6-8PM, where she and her band will take the stage at Louis Engel Park. Be sure not to miss this great concert (but bring a chair or blankets to sit on-- the rain all week will make for some squishy seating on the grass.)
You may remember hearing a few months back about the newest addition to the Town's fleet, our all-electric Nissan Leaf, which is being driven by our Town Building Inspector. We were able to secure this vehicle through a New York State program that enabled us to get a discounted vehicle with an additional $5,000 rebate, and we are also able to charge the car for free for the first two years of the lease. This has worked out great for the Town, and might be an excellent choice for your family or business too. (Have you seen how much money you can save WHILE reducing our reliance on fossil fuels? Pretty compelling!) A similar offer has been extended to all residents who have Con Ed as their delivery company (even if you are part of the CCA program, Con Ed is still your delivery company.) Our friend Ron Kamen at EarthKind Energy, who has helped us through our electric car buying process, shared the following information with us about this great program:
This has been another whirlwind week in Ossining-- can you believe it's already been 4 days since the Independence Day Fireworks? Although unofficial (The Gazette estimated 6,000, wow!), it seems like we may have had a record number of visitors down to Engel Park for this year's event, and you couldn't ask for better weather!
Our food trucks were cranking out snacks,Tribal Legacy kept the crowd moving with some great reggae tunes (there was a lot of dancing going on, to be sure) and the firework show was exceptional. The party didn't stop with the fireworks, though-- Tribal Legacy stayed on and played for a big crowd until after 10:30PM!
We had a great time, and I want to thank everyone who helped this annual event to go smoothly this year, including Superintendent of Recreation Chris Soi, our Town Parks crew, the Village of Ossining Parks and DPW, and of course, our first responders (the Ossining Police, Ossining Fire Department, and Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps) for getting everyone in and out of the park safely, and a special shout out to Maddi Zachacz in my office for all of her behind the scenes work she did (and in front! Check her out making sure the band was as awesome as they promised!)
Did you know that today is Gloria Fried Day in the Town of Ossining? Last night we celebrated Gloria's career in public service as she retires from her position as our Receiver of Taxes. Gloria has served the Ossining community in many ways since she moved here with her husband, John, in 1972, and she will certainly be missed. Thank you to Gloria for all of her hard work, especially for the many innovations she brought to the Tax Office to increase efficiency and maintain a high level of customer service. I hope you will all join me in welcoming our new Receiver of Taxes, Holly Perlowitz, as she starts in this role next week and picks up where Gloria left off in serving the public.
Ossining's Annual Fireworks Celebration takes place this Monday, July 3rd and is also the start of our Summer Waterfront Concert Series. This year's celebration features reggae cover band Tribal Legacy beginning at 7:30pm, with the beautiful fireworks beginning at 9:15pm. Tribal Legacy will follow the fireworks display with another set and play until about 10:30pm, so plan to stick around and avoid the traffic. This is one of the highlights of summer in Ossining, and I encourage everyone to attend. Just as a reminder – on Monday the 3rd, the commuter parking lot on the West side of the tracks will be closed off once it is full, as will the access road over the tracks. In order to get to the West side of the tracks, you must use the Snowden Avenue bridge (by Shattemuc Yacht Club) if you require access to Harbor Square, 3 Westerly, or any other businesses along Westerly Road. To enjoy the fireworks, your best bet is to park on the East side of the tracks. Commuters -- please be mindful that your car may be towed or blocked in if you park in an area that will be used for the program and do not get back to Ossining to pick up your car before 4pm. So since July 3rd is a workday for many, commuters, please plan your travel accordingly! The boat ramp at Engel Park will also be closed on Monday. Also, we received some complaints last year that people were using drones during the fireworks display which blocked the view of the fireworks for some attendees. Drones are not permitted to be flown over people. Also, please be mindful of everyone at this community event, and try to not bring anything that will disrupt your neighbors. In general, follow the instructions of the Ossining Police Department, and everyone is sure to have a great time!
If you are reading this in time, you can still catch some awesome live music tonight. Vibe Theory, a local favorite, is playing at 8PM at the Steamer Firehouse Gallery. Tickets are $15 at the door-- come in and escape the drizzly rain while you rock out to some great original tunes.
If you are not reading this in time, no sweat (unless you are outdoors today, in which case, lots of sweat)-- our Summer Concert Series is on the way! The Series kicks off on Monday, July 3rd with the Independence Day Fireworks celebration featuring reggae cover band Tribal Legacy, and goes all the way through Labor Day Weekend. We are looking forward to a great season down at Louis Engel Park, I hope to see you there! (As a reminder-- on Monday the 3rd, commuters will not be able to cross the bridge into or out of the Metro North lot between 4PM and 10PM, when the fireworks are over. Please plan your travels accordingly.)
