This weekend, we begin events honoring our community's lost soldiers in recognition of Memorial Day. On Saturday, May 21st, our local American Legion posts and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be decorating graves at St. Augustine's and Dale Cemeteries early in the morning, before a 9:00 am formal salute at St. Augustine's Cemetery, followed by Dale Cemetery. Another way to honor veterans at our cemeteries is by volunteering on Saturday, May 28th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Ossining Historic Cemeteries Conservancy Veterans Gravestone Restoration and Cleaning at Dale Cemetery. On Sunday, May 22nd, there will be a ceremony at Ossining Boat and Canoe Club for lost Sailors and Marines from 11:00 am,followed by the annual OBCC Commissioning Day ending at 2:00 pm. On Monday, May 30th, both Ossining and Briarcliff will have their annual Memorial Day Parades. Ossining Memorial Day parade kicks off at 9:30 am at Melrose Lumber, on the corner of Calam Avenue, marching down Croton Avenue and Main Street, turning onto Spring Street and William Street, ending at Nelson Park for a ceremony beginning around 11 am. In Briarcliff, the parade will line up on Pleasantville Road and promptly begin at 12 noon. Memorial Day is an important time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our country's service members and their families, so we hope you will be able to attend one of the many meaningful ceremonies in our community this weekend and next.
Our community is blessed to have dedicated first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and ambulance corps members. On Saturday, May 21st, the Ossining Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its annual parade at 4:00 pm, which starts on Croton Avenue at Roosevelt Square, and ends at the waterfront. This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the Monitor Hose Company No. 4, which is an extraordinary accomplishment and certainly a reason to celebrate this weekend!
This past week, we had an opportunity to recognize other first responders in our community during National EMS Week and Police Week. The Ossining Police Department hosted an Awards Ceremony on Wednesday evening which I attended, during which they honored the exceptional work of our police officers and civilians. If you are inspired by the work of our professional and dedicated police officers, and thinking of joining our police force, you are in luck. The filing period for the 2016 Westchester County Civil Service Police Exam is coming up in a few weeks, visit Westchester County Human Resources for more information.
