The holiday season is in full swing, and we have been celebrating the spirit of the season at 16 Croton! On Monday, the Town Tax Office continued their yearly tradition of hosting a Chili Party for Town and Village employees (and maybe even a resident or two!) Here is Holly with her two deputies, Julie & Patti-- the hostesses with the mostess-es! This was very well received (pun intended!) by the many, many people who came in to pay their second half school taxes. There's still time-- the last day the office will be open is December 29th (but just until 12 noon).

They had many visitors who came to say hello and left with a cup of chili, complete with all the fixins and a "to-go" lid.

On Tuesday, I held the last Department Head staff meeting for 2017-- we discussed our successes and our challenges, and shared some hopes for 2018. (We also shared some cookies, some fruit and some delicious bagels and lox.) I have a lot of hope for the year ahead and am excited to have another two years to work with this great team. Here we are with the Staff gift that Maddi and I picked out for this year-- bobbleheads from Crown Trophy on North State Road.

I want to give special thanks to all of our great department heads (Kathy Asaro, Mary Ann Roberts, Pete Connolly, Michael G. O'Connor, Fernando Gonzalez, Holly Perlowitz, John Hamilton, and Mario Velardo), along with our IMA partners (Tom Warren, Dale Ferreira, Kevin Sylvester, Paul Fraioli and Andy Tiess) for another exceptional year and for providing outstanding service to our residents. We couldn't do it without you!

We had some exciting news in the Town this week. On Tuesday evening at our Town Hall Meeting, the Board named our unanimous choice for a Town Board member to replace Kim Jeffrey. Ms. Jeffrey was offered a job working with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office, which precludes her from holding public office, and she resigned from her current term effective December 1st, 2017, also opting not to begin her newly-elected term on January 1st, 2018. The Board interviewed all 14 of the eligible applicants and selected Jackie Shaw, a longtime resident of the Unincorporated Area who has also served on the Recreation Advisory Board for many years.

The Board plans to vote to appoint Jackie into the first year of Ms. Jeffrey's four year term at our meeting on December 26th.  I know you will find in Jackie an inquisitive mind, a caring heart, and a passion for this great community we share, which are just a few of the reasons we believe she will be a great fit for Ossining. Please join us in welcoming Jackie, who will begin her term on January 1st, 2018.

At that same meeting, we asked our Parks Foreman Mario Velardo to do a presentation for the Board and the public about the projects that have taken place in our Town Parks this year. Mario walked us through the extensive work they have done at Cedar Lane, Ryder, Engel and Gerlach Parks since the opening of the Cedar Lane Arts Center (CLAC) this past April. Even if you have been following the progress through my updates over the past few months, it is really something to see everything all at once! You can check out the presentation  pdf here (84.37 MB) , or you can watch the meeting video (start at the 14:00 mark) to hear Mario's commentary on the work. I want to offer special thanks to my colleagues on the Town Board for prioritizing this important work this year-- there is much more to do, but preserving and improving our capital assets are one of the most important responsibilities we have as elected officials and I am proud to be part of a team who shares that belief.

Speaking of our Parks, earlier this week, the Village of Ossining released the pdf Winter 2018 Recreation Brochure (6.23 MB) . In addition to all of the excellent programs that take place at the Community Center, we have quite a few exciting new programs at Cedar Lane Arts Center in Cedar Lane Park. There are offerings for children and adults, for practiced artists and newbies, and the activities can be an affordable boost to your creative side! The origami class for adults is something I'm considering, will I see you there? In the meanwhile, we are planning for the unveiling of the new sign welcoming folks to the Arts Center-- keep your eyes peeled for an event announcement in the very near future!

Do you still have some last minute shopping to do? Make sure you pick up some "Ossining Bucks" from the Village Manager's Office at 16 Croton Avenue, from the Ossining Public Library at 53 Croton Avenue, or from the Recreation Center at 95 Broadway. Instead of covering the parking meters around the Village as they usually do around the holidays, the Village of Ossining partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to start the Ossining Bucks program-- each "Buck" entitles you to $5 off on a purchase from one of many local businesses. You may only use the "buck" once per transaction, and they are good through January 8th, 2018-- there's still time to pick out some lovely and thoughtful gifts this holiday season while supporting Ossining small businesses like Bob's Army-Navy Store, VaZa Salon, The Boathouse, and so many more. See the whole list of participating businesses here.

Wondering what to do with the kids next week? How about the Teatown Holi-Daze Camp? Teatown offers half day camp for 4 and 5 year olds, and full day camp for children between 6 and 12 years of age-- they can spend the day hiking, doing crafts, and learning about our animal friends in the great outdoors! Check out the Teatown Calendar page for more information.

As a reminder, the Town will be closing at 12 noon today and will be closed on Monday, December 25th for the holiday. We will be back at work bright and early on Tuesday morning (December 26th) to serve you! In the meanwhile, I want to wish a very merry Christmas to all who celebrate-- enjoy the long weekend with family, friends and loved ones!
