As we head into the last week of Summer 2016, I hope everyone had a chance to take advantage of some of the drier days earlier this week-- and hopefully, this weekend. Our final Waterfront Concert of the season kicks off tonight at 6PM, where students from the Mike Risko Music School will be showcased before turning the stage over to The Old Mill Singers, who will be performing some contemporary favorites. We are ending the night with our Party in the Park, a DJ dance party by our very own DJ Johnny G, which kicks off at 8:30PM-- it promises to be a great night, so please come down and say goodbye to this great Ossining summer in style!
We also want to share that the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce will be postponing Lobsterfest, which was scheduled for this Saturday, August 27th. We will update you on the new date when it is rescheduled. However, why not check out some other events this weekend? Mind, Body, Spirit Ossining has two events scheduled, starting with Cuerpaso, a fusion of Latin dance and soccer, on Saturday, August 27th. Meet at Nelson Park at 9AM for this creative and fun workout hosted by Lori-Beth Patsey-Villalobos of Open Door; all you need to bring is a soccer ball (but they will have a few to spare). On Sunday, August 28th, Enrique Rosario of ICU Fit Training will lead one of his famous "Sunday Fun-Day" workouts at Engel Park at 9:30AM. Come on down and get in a quick workout with an awesome view!
The Town Board met on Tuesday evening for a combined Regular Meeting and Work Session, during which we discussed a variety of topics, including capital planning in our Parks. However, we also discussed the US Coast Guard's proposed anchorage sites throughout the Hudson River, and the Town Board passed a resolution opposing the request, while also asking for a 90 day extension of the public comment period. We want everyone's voice to be heard on this complex and important issue, and we have joined many other surrounding municipalities to form the Hudson River Waterfront Alliance through which we can come together to support to the "Ban the Barges" campaign. To learn more, you can click here, or follow the link in the banner of the Town's homepage. (As an aside, the Town Board will not be meeting this coming Tuesday, but will be back for a Work Session at 16 Croton Avenue on Tuesday, September 6th at 7:30PM.)
We have a special announcement to share from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The DEC has contracted with a vendor who will be applying aquatic herbicide to stop the spread of hydrilla verticillata, an invasive plant species that has been increasingly present in the Croton River. The herbicide application will begin on Tuesday, August 30th at noon and will last for 24 hours (until noon on Wednesday the 31st).
The following water use restrictions will apply during the time of treatment (August 30th – August 31st, 2016)
If you have any questions, you can contact Dr. Catherine McGlynn, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator, NYSDEC, at 518-408-0436 or SŌLitude Lake Management at 908-850-0303 during business hours.
Another important event coming up will be Senior Law Day, hosted by the Ossining Public Library in the Budarz Theater on Monday, September 12th. Seminars for seniors and their adult caregivers will be offered between 10AM and 1PM on a variety of topics, including Medicare benefits and estate planning (in Spanish) and housing options for seniors and how to avoid scams and frauds (in English). Come a little early, a light breakfast will be served between 9:15AM and 9:45AM. This program is free, but registration is required. Please call Linda Levine at (914) 941-2416 ext. 317 to register or with any questions.
