I hope everyone has enjoyed the last few days of their summer holidays. Ossining students and teachers had some beautiful weather to welcome everyone back to a great school year. Briarcliff students start this Tuesday. Please remember to drive carefully, be mindful of crosswalks, and always stop for school buses.
Unfortunately, the weather is not to remain as pleasant. Tropical Storm Hermine which is currently impacting our neighbors to the south, may cause some trouble in this area for Labor Day weekend. Although it is expected that the storm will significantly weaken over land, Tropical Storm Hermine's track looks like it is heading our way, and could result in heavy rain and wind late Sunday night into Monday. If you plan on heading to the beach for Labor Day, please be cautious of rip currents and rough surf conditions as a result of Tropical Storm Hermine. For the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, please visit their website. Con Edison is also making preparations to respond to any power outages as a result of the impending storm. To report downed power lines, outages, and check service restoration status, visit Con Edison's website or call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, please make sure to have your Con Edison account number available, and if possible, report whether your neighbors have also lost power. Con Edison also offers the following tips about being prepared in the event of a storm:
If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with your hands or any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.
Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios are in working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries.
Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.
Next week, we get back into our normal Town Board meeting schedule, starting with Tuesday's Work Session. At this meeting, we will be joined by Highway Superintendent Michael G. O'Connor who will give a presentation on upcoming paving projects. Next, the Board will consider a one-year extension to our contract with CPI-HR, the company that handles the Town's Affordable Care Act reporting. Receiver of Taxes Gloria Fried will give a presentation with an update on the recent foreclosure auction and the operations of the Receiver's Office. Additionally, David Stolman, from F.P. Clark Associates, the Town's planning consultant, will also join us at Tuesday's meeting to discuss the local law he has been working on based on Planning and Zoning analysis. Finally, Tuesday's meeting will end with an executive session to receive advice of counsel and to discuss contracts.
