First thing's first-- what are you doing behind your computer? Don't you know it's National Doughnut Day? Our very own First Village Coffee on Main Street is hosting a pop-up with Peaceful Provisions, the makers of some of the finest donuts you ever will taste, from 5PM to 8PM tonight (they happen to be vegan, but if I hadn't mentioned it, you wouldn't have guessed.) Go get one and then come back to the update. I'll wait.
We had a great week in Ossining. Since we last spoke, two new businesses have opened their doors in our downtown to great acclaim. On Friday evening, the long-awaited Sing Sing Kill Brewery hosted a ribbon cutting at their home on Spring Street, the weather was perfect and the crowd was eager!
After the ribbon cutting, we all gathered inside to get a taste of what they've been cooking up-- aside from a beautiful, clean, industrial-chic atmosphere, the beer is delicious and the brewery offers a great selection. You can even grab a "crowler" (a giant can) of your favorite to bring home with you!

Heading into the holiday weekend and things are looking good from 16 Croton! There are many great activities going on around Ossining this weekend, beginning with some events this very evening. I am on my way to the ribbon cutting of Ossining's newest business, the Sing Sing Kill Brewery on Spring Street-- will you come join us for a cold one when the tap room opens at 5PM? If not, don't worry-- they will be open all weekend (tonight until 11PM, tomorrow from 1PM to 11PM, and Sunday & Monday from 1PM to 10PM), so come enjoy some down time in their beautiful new space that has been granted NYS Farm Brewery status, which means they use only ingredients local to the Hudson Valley. Check their website to learn more about the history of this locally owned business and to see some photos of how far they've come. Congratulations!
When you're done trying some of the offerings at the Brewery, consider heading down the hill to Water Street. Westchester Collaborative Theater will be presenting their newest Play In the Box production, a performance series that offers member playwrights an opportunity to present their never before seen plays to an audience at our black box theater. The plays, all self-produced by the playwrights featuring actors and directors of their choice, range from readings to fully staged performances. Following each play, the audience is asked to become part of the creative process through talk-backs that assist the playwrights in identifying what works and what doesn’t in the plays. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door.
Going to be on the other side of Town? The Soul Projekt, one of our favorite local bands, will be playing at Maya Riviera tonight at 8:30PM-- make your way to this great spot on North State Road a little earlier and grab a table for dinner before a fun evening of jazz.

Let's start with a big shout out to all the special women in our lives-- this Sunday is Mother's Day, and I know there are so many "moms" in my life who have taught me, guided me, helped me, and encouraged me. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, grandmas, step-moms, and moms of furry children out there, this weekend is all about you!
We have a wonderful host of activities going on in Ossining this weekend, so I will get to those shortly. However, we have a lot of important work going on that I want to share with you first.
On Tuesday evening, the Town Board held our regular Legislative Session at the Courthouse on Spring Street, and we had several guest appearances. Our first item was a special recognition of the Gullottas Fight Cancer team, who has been actively raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Team Captains Amilia and Matthew Jr., along with several of their teammates, joined the Board and Michele Lippen from LLS to celebrate their accomplishments thus far-- as of Tuesday, they had raised $33,700 towards their goal of $50,000! If their efforts until now have been any indication, I have no doubt that they will meet and exceed that goal before the deadline. Congratulations on behalf of all of Ossining to Gullotta House and the team for a job well done!

First off, you still have some time to catch a great opportunity to learn about new jobs coming to Ossining -- today, Friday, May 18th, YAI Westchester is hosting a walk-in job fair at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center between 3:30 and 5:30PM in the Museum area. Bring a resume along so you can apply onsite for openings that they will have available once they move into their new home in Ossining.
Yesterday, I attended the meeting of the Westchester County GIS User Group at SUNY Purchase about how GIS can be utilized to address issues related to sustainability and resiliency. It was very interesting to learn more about these very important topics in planning. Also, County Executive George Latimer addressed the meeting to thank and recognize the amazing work the Westchester County staff does on a regular basis. Thank you to these county employees for all of their hard work!

Spring is finally here to stay -- I hope you are all enjoying this week's beautiful weather!
This past Monday, Victoria from my office and I attended a meeting with the Westchester County Department of Planning and Westchester's municipal and not-for-profit leaders regarding the county's Community Development Block Grant consortium. This consortium has been dormant for a few years, but is picking back up again to help bring community development grants to Westchester municipalities and not-for-profits. At next Tuesday's legislative session, the Town Board will be voting on joining this consortium to hopefully claim some grant dollars for the Town. Also this week, we learned that many New York State grants have been rolled out through the Consolidated Funding Application. We look forward to developing a few strong applications to these grant opportunities in the coming months.
Later that day, I got the chance to enjoy a cup of coffee with County Executive George Latimer at Ossining's very own First Village Coffee-- it is wonderful to have our CE spend so much time in our community (although who wouldn't be wooed by a delicious latte from FVC?) Check out this neat shot captured by Mr. Latimer's Director of Communications (and proud Ossining resident!) Catherine Cioffi-- thanks to First Village for hosting us!
