Updates from the Town of Ossining- Tuesday, March 6th, 2018

 

So, let's start with the good news-- most of our Town residents have had their power restored, and the handful of spots that do not yet have power back are expected to be up and running shortly. The crews that are in Town now are here to stay and are focused at this moment on clearing the roadways. Con Ed has assured us we will keep these crews through what comes next...

 

Which is to say, snow is coming. Depending on which model you are following, we could start getting precipitation as early as 10PM tonight, but it seems the serious snow will be coming around rush hour tomorrow morning (Wednesday). It also seems inevitable that we will have more than 6 inches of accumulation on the ground before all is said and done tomorrow evening, and possibly as much as a foot and a half.

Updates from the Town of Ossining- Monday, March 5th, 2018

We are still plugging along here in Ossining and while we are not yet out of the woods, we continue to work with our Con Edison liaison to remind them of the areas that are still without power (largely in the 9A/134 neighborhood, as well as on Ganung Drive, although there are a few "singletons" related to very specific damage that are also awaiting restoration.

We are fresh off of the Con Ed Municipal Conference Call, and here is some good news to share:

  • The number of residents without electricity throughout Westchester is just above 40K as of this morning, down from well over 100K yesterday.
  • We have been able to secure a generator for the traffic light at the 9A/134 intersection.
  • Con Ed has secured 294 contractors (they work in teams of two) from outside our service area, and another 97 have entered the region, including 66 linemen from Asplundh, who are serving as both "cut and clear" AND "restoration" crews. A request for 500 additional resources has been called in anticipation of the forecasted snow (more on that in a minute) and we are confident that these crews will stick around to get us through the week.
  • There is a dry ice distribution location in the KMart Shopping Center in Yorktown (355 Downing Drive), they will be there until 6PM tonight. The New Rochelle City Hall location, along with a location at Eastchester Avenue/Waters Place (adjacent to the transit yard) in the Bronx, will also be open until 6PM tonight.
  • Club Fit Briarcliff is still welcoming non-members to stop by and shower (bring your own towels please) and charge your devices. The Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce Office at 2 Church Street is offering free work space until 3PM today if anyone needs it, and the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center will be open as a warming/showering center from 7AM until 10PM every day this week.

Unfortunately, as some of you know, not all the news is good. Parts of Ossining are still without power, although we do have a crew in Town at this moment. We have heard from some residents that they have had power all along and have lost it within the last two hours-- please know that this is likely temporary, and is a good indication that is a crew is restoring elsewhere in your neighborhood. If your power does not come back within a few hours, please call Con Ed (1-800-75-CONED) and get a ticket number. I also encourage you to check the interactive outage map to see if there have been updated restoration times for your area. Con Ed is standing by their Tuesday, 11PM restoration time for 90% of affected customers.

There have also been a few issues with text messages indicating that power has been restored to a neighborhood when, in fact, it had not. The explanation we were given is that power being restored to a general area is what prompts that text message, but there may be outliers. If you got such a text and did not have your service restored, they are advising two courses of action. First, be sure that the service from the street to your home is intact. If this is not the case, you may  want to consider hiring an electrician now so that when power is fully restored, you will be ahead of the game. Second, let Con Ed know that you in fact do not have power. If all appears in place, please call Con Ed and get another ticket.

Another complicating factor is that we are expecting snow on Wednesday, although it is yet unclear just how much snow. Con Ed has assured us they are working to get the vast majority of our locations re-energized prior to the accumulation. Our local liaison as well as our Ossining PD and Highway crews have been doing all that they possibly can to keep the focus on Ossining with the crews we have and to keep our resources dedicated to getting this fixed as expeditiously as we possibly can.

Great news! Our good friends at Club Fit Briarcliff have your back if you are still without power-- come in between 6:30AM and 9PM tomorrow (Sunday) for a hot shower and to charge up your devices (bring your own towels please!) The Club has always been a great partner to the Town, and we are incredibly appreciative of their hospitality during this tough time.

 

Updates from the Town of Ossining- Sunday, March 4th, 2018

  

Officials from the Town and Village of Ossining continue to work with our liaison from Con Edison to get power restored to our residences and businesses. Unfortunately, due to the sheer volume of customers without power throughout the Northeast, they are unable to restore everyone as quickly as we (or they) would like. On the Con Ed municipal conference call at 11AM, we were told that they expect to have 90% of Westchester customers without power (101,000) back up by 11PM Tuesday evening. Smaller jobs will likely be finished on Wednesday. As you can imagine, this is a triage situation, and our hardest hit area is the intersection of 9A/134 where our traffic light is out in this major thoroughfare, and the surrounding neighborhoods, so that is where we have asked that attention be focused right now. The good news is that more mutual aid is headed our way, so hopefully that timeline will be tightened up a bit.

 

 

Admittedly, this is not excellent news. However, we will continue to be proactive and push for all the resources we can get for Ossining during this difficult situation. In the meanwhile, be sure to call in a service outage in your neighborhood, don't assume someone has already done so! Call 1-800-75-CONED and get a ticket number. Please make good use of the resources we have available. The Joseph G. Caputo Community Center will be open as a warming center until at least 6PM tonight (possibly later depending on need), and our friends at Club Fit Briarcliff have been gracious enough to open their doors to folks who need a hot shower or someplace to charge their devices (if you decide to take them up on the shower, please bring your own towels). DeCicco's (The Millwood location is closest) has offered to store perishable items until power is restored-- bring them your bagged or boxed items and they will hang on to them until your fridge is back online. Con Ed is distributing dry ice from New Rochelle City Hall (515 North Avenue) until 6PM tonight. They are working on a Northern Westchester location near Cortlandt/Yorktown, we will keep you posted.

 

 

The OPD has been assessing the roads this afternoon and will be reporting back to our schools about potential plans for the morning. We will let you knew when we hear something official.

Nor'easter Update 3-3-18

The Nor'easter has wallopped our area. Our Town Highway and Parks crews were dealing with the storm and clearing efforts last night and were back out again early this morning. We requested a ConEd Municipal Liaison who arrives this morning to work with the Ossining police to triage all the storm damage related to power lines.

Thanks to Chief Sylvester, Lieutenant Slater and Lieutenant Montague, they were able to hit many of the worst spots in the Town. 9A and 134 was their first stop and the work there was extensive. Cutting and clearing the first step and they worked hand in hand with our crews to do that.

As far as restoration of power, we have been told the damage was severe and is not a quick fix. We have worked with the Village of Ossining to make sure the Rec Center at 95 Broadway would be open as a warming center until 10 tonight and from 9a-6pm tomorrow, and more if there is demand.

Phones can be charged, and there are bathrooms and showers and water there. We are still trying to learn about dry ice distribution from Con Ed and have also been in touch with our congressional representatives to see if they can do anything to help expedite recovery efforts.
