The Town of Ossining is seeking an Assistant Automotive Mechanic for the Town Highway Department!

The successful applicant will work under the direction of the Town’s Automotive Mechanic and Highway Superintendent, and may perform tasks including, but not limited to:

Assists with Vehicle Repairs: Assists with vehicle repairs, including but not limited to maintenance, diagnosis, brake adjustments, electric and gas welding, accident repairs, etc. Operates drill press, welding and burning, computer diagnostic, electrical testing, and tire balancing equipment, or other tools. 

Assists with Equipment Repairs: Assists with repairs on equipment owned by Town of Ossining Highway, Parks, Senior Nutrition, Building, and Cemetery Departments.

Assists with Inspections of Vehicles/Equipment: Regularly assists with inspects vehicles and equipment as part of continued maintenance plans.

Assists with Recordkeeping, Communication with Department and Vendors: Assists with ordering needed repair parts, maintaining records, and communicating needs or concerns with Highway Superintendent or Foreman, especially in the absence of the Auto Mechanic. Occasionally will communicate with outside vendors and other department heads regarding orders, projects, etc. and keeps vehicle records for all Town vehicles as needed.

Perform other routine manual laboring work for the Town Highway Department under the supervision of the Highway General Foreman, including but not limited to routine cleaning, maintenance and repair assignments; Loads and unloads materials, and equipment from trucks; Receives and/or moves supplies, equipment, and furniture; Cleans and operates equipment supplies and instruments in accordance with defined procedures; Power jets sewer lines, manholes and catch basins, including related work at sewer station lift stations; Rakes leaves and hauls away rubbish; Does rough cement finishing, rakes asphalt, sets forms for asphalt, does rough grading and otherwise assists in street maintenance activities; Assists in the painting and erection of street signs; Assists in painting lines on highway; Cuts grass by hand or with tractor driven mowing machines and cuts up trees that have been felled; Performs snow removal duties; and other work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Good knowledge of tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the automotive mechanics trade; good knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; ability to perform difficult repairs on all types of automotive equipment; ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties; demonstrated ability to get along well with others; physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position. Experience working with fully electric vehicles and/or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles preferred.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Either (a) graduation from high or trade school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience in automotive repair work; or (b) six years of experience in automotive repair work; or (c) a satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment.  Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) preferred.

Starting salary (January 2022): $65,323
