We are finishing up this week a little waterlogged, but full of excitement for what promises to be an exciting weekend in the Town of Ossining!
Tonight, we will be joining the Village of Ossining in honoring a good friend who left us too soon. Shannon Ross was a dedicated supporter of the tennis program in Ossining, and even founded the Ossining Community Tennis Association. Tonight at 7PM, there will be a ceremony at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center to dedicate the Shannon Ross Tennis Courts at Nelson Park. Her enthusiasm, generosity and exuberance will long be remembered in Ossining, and the Town has named May 6th "Shannon Ross Day" in her memory.
Tomorrow marks a very important day in Ossining-- the Town will be hosting the First Annual Health and Wellness Day between 10AM and 4PM, which also includes the kick-off of Mind, Body, Spirit Ossining. We had planned for this event to be held outdoors at Louis Engel Waterfront Park, but with the weather forecast looking a little dicey, we have decided to head indoors and move all activities to the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center. There will be more than 40 vendors on site for this exciting celebration of all things wellness, and there will be a variety of demonstrations from our local fitness gurus to give you a taste of what's to come in the Mind, Body, Spirit Ossining program.
Also tomorrow? The Teatown Plantfest, an event I look forward to every year! Tomorrow, the hours will be from 9AM to 2PM with free admission, although you can get "First Pick" tonight between 4PM and 7PM for a $10 admission. Plants make a beautiful Mother's Day gift, just sayin'. Another green event is the Green Ossining Tag Sale (see flyer below)-- between 10AM and 4PM, you can cruise around Town and stop in at the nearly 30 homes who are scheduled to participate. Check out greenossining.org for a list of all the addresses, as well as what can be found at each sale! (Sorry, no "holds" allowed.)
Speaking of the Unique Area, on Wednesday, May 18th at 7PM, the Department of Environmental Conservation will be holding a meeting at the Ossining Public Library's Budarz Theater to hear from the community about proposed changes to the use of the Croton Gorge Unique Area; some of the proposed changes include the prohibition of bonfires and cooking fires, alcohol consumption and charcoal/gas grills. Please come to this meeting and express your support for these restrictions-- they will be critical in making this area safer for visitors, less intrusive to the neighbors, and preserving the tranquility and pristine condition of the space for future generations.
As outdoor activities are ramping up and the weather (we hope) will be getting warmer, we continue to get information from a variety of sources about how we can combat the Zika virus at home. Westchester County sent out some information earlier this week from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), including a website that we have embedded in the Town's site (check the upper right hand corner on our Homepage). You can also click here for some talking points from Westchester County about how to prevent the spread of Zika, and we urge you to share this info with family, friends and neighbors.
Bicycle Sundays continue this weekend in Westchester County, which means that between the Westchester County Center (Exit 22) and Scarsdale Road in Yonkers (Exit 4), the Bronx River Parkway will be closed to cars between the hours of 10AM and 2PM certain Sundays in May, June and September. Please look here for more details.
We got some great feedback in our Town Parks survey, which closed this past Monday. 72 users gave us their thoughts on what makes our park system great, and where we could stand to improve. We had those suggestions in mind on Wednesday, where several members of the Town staff met with our Engineering Team to brainstorm ideas for a more comprehensive capital plan. Working through the Great Recession, coupled with living under the tax cap since 2012, many of the larger improvements required in Town facilities have fallen by the wayside due to lack of resources (staff AND dollars). While we all recognize that being on a more structured schedule for asset replacement and maintenance is crucial, we also need to find a way to pay for it. I will be bringing these survey results to the Town Board at our June 7th Work Session and asking the Board to consider options to address some of these issues, once and for all. Stay tuned for news on this project as we move forward.
(And don't think we forgot the survey raffle-- using a random number generator, our two winners are Nicole Moné and Elaine Gardner. Congratulations, and enjoy dining out at some of the best restaurants Westchester has to offer!)
As if we haven't given you enough ideas, check out some events going on in Town below. I hope to see you at one of our many events in Ossining tomorrow!

Another week has gone by in the Town of Ossining, and the next time we see you, it will be the month of May. This is such an exciting time in our community as the weather gets warmer and our activity choices broaden to include more time outdoors-- have you walked the Sing Sing Kill Greenway yet?
Appointments with Tyler Technologies are winding down, but many of you have stopped in to pay your Town/County taxes. As the due date falls on a weekend this year, you have until Monday, May 2nd to pay without penalty: the Town Tax Office will be open extended hours on Monday (8AM to 6PM) to accomodate you. Our Receiver of Taxes sends out regular reminders through her email listserv-- we encourage you to subscribe to her newsletter for great reminders about important upcoming due dates.
