A Project Sponsored by Ossining Communities That Care
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Mission: | To combat domestic violence through community outreach, education, prevention and awareness. |
| Co-Chairs: | Kenneth Donato, Chief of Police, Town of Ossining Police Department |
| Goal: | To mobilize leadership of the Ossining community and the general public in an ongoing communications campaign designed to increase awareness and knowledge of the issue of domestic violence and its prevention. |
| Fact: | In 2006, there were a combined total of 205 Domestic Incident Reports in the Village of Ossining, Town of Ossining, and Village of Briarcliff Manor. (Source: Westchester County Office for Women) |
| Key Events: | The Partnership was launched in September 2006 by local elected officials, community organizations and other civic leaders. A public forum was held in October and a candlelight vigil in early November. Planning committee meetings are monthly. In addition to a range of outreach activities, Partnership members are now carrying out three community education projects:

| Purple Ribbon Campaign: |
To further increase awareness, in October 2006, the Village of Ossining Parks Department tied 370 ribbons to a tree at the intersection of Pleasantville and Underhill Roads. Each ribbon represents a Domestic Incident Report made in the 20-month period between January 2005 and August 2006 in the three communities. |
| Overview: | This grassroots initiative has succeeded in bringing together all sectors of the community. This includes business; education; government; interfaith; judicial; law enforcement; medical; and social services. The program got underway when the Northern Westchester Shelter, a lead agency of the project, asked Ossining to serve as the flagship community in what the agency envisions will be a countywide initiative in communities across Westchester. |
| Project Model: | The project is based on a successful model implemented in Fairfield County, CT. |
